Dr. Kuldeep Srivastava Dr. Kuldeep Srivastava, MD
Chief Medical Officer, IGEHRC

Dr Srivastava is currently Consultant, Paediatric Ophthalmologist, and Chief Medical Officer, IGEHRC. He joined IGEHRC with the aim of serving the poor and underprivileged of UP. He established the paediatric ophthalmology department at IGEHRC Lucknow, which sees 500 children each month and provides surgical treatment to approximately 15 children per month. During his career, he has performed in excess of 3,000 paediatric eye surgeries and 10,000 adult cataract surgeries, and screened the eyes of over a 100,000 school children.

Prior to joining IGEHRC, Dr Srivastava worked as Consultant, Paediatric Ophthalmologist, Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai and Sadguru Netra Chikitsalaya, Chitrakoot, Madhya Pradesh. While in Chitrakoot, he developed the Children’s Eye Care Centre there which performs over 1,000 eye surgeries on children every year. Dr Srivastava is also an ORBIS Medical Volunteer Faculty and has conducted training programmes in Bangladesh and China. He has presented several papers at various conferences and published articles in national and international journals.

Dr Srivastava was awarded his basic medical degree (MBBS) and specialty degree in Ophthalmology (MS Ophthalmology) from Benaras Hindu University in 1992 and 1996, respectively. Subsequently, he received special training in Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus under Dr P. Vijayalakshmi at the Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai, under Dr David Hunter, MD, at the Children’s Hospital, Boston, and under Dr John P. Lee at Moorefield’s Eye Hospital, London.


Dr. Ashutosh Khandelwal Dr. Ashutosh Khandelwal, MD
Deputy Chief Medical Officer, IGEHRC, Lucknow

Dr Ashutosh Khandelwal serves as the Deputy Chief Medical at IGEHRC Lucknow. He is also Head of Department of Cataract and General Ophthalmology and coordinates training of doctors at IGEHRC. Dr Khandelwal and his wife (a glaucoma specialist) were the founding members of the team of doctors that created IGEHRC, Munshiganj, Amethi. He is deeply committed to eradicating needless blindness and serving the community, especially the poorest of the poor.

Notwithstanding the tremendous exposure and training he received at Aravind, he was deeply pained at the almost total lack of eye care in his home state of UP. The establishment of IGEHRC in December 2005 was a unique opportunity to serve the people of UP where quality eye care facilities were accessible only to a privileged few. Dr Khandelwal has performed approximately 14,000 sight-restoring cataract surgeries during his career and has held over 200 eye camps.

Dr. Khandelwal was awarded the basic medical degree of MBBS from the University of Calcutta in 1998. He received his MS in Ophthalmology from MLB Medical College, Jhansi UP and completed an Advanced Anterior Segment and IOL Microsurgery Fellowship at the Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai. He has trained a multitude of doctors in various ophthalmic surgeries specially Phacoemulsification. He has presented several research papers at various conferences and is involved in research activities at IGEHRC.


Dr. Aloy Majumdar Dr. Aloy Majumdar, MD
Deputy Chief Medical Officer, IGEHRC Amethi

Dr Aloy Majumdar serves as the Deputy Chief Medical Officer, IGEHRC Amethi and is Senior Consultant in the Department of Vitreo-Retina Services at IGEHRC Lucknow. He is a founding member of the team of doctors that created IGEHRC, Munshiganj, Amethi. He also has an academic involvement in the various projects of IGEHRC.

Primarily joining as a Specialist in 2005, he was concerned at the almost total lack of eye care and poor quality of eye care available in his home state of UP. The establishment of IGEHRC in December 2005 came as a unique opportunity to serve the people of UP. Dr Majumdar has performed approximately 12,000 sight-restoring cataract surgeries during his career and held more than 175 eye camps.

Dr Majumdar was awarded the basic medical degree of MBBS from the GSVM Medical College, Kanpur, in 1997. He joined his Ophthalmic Residency at Regional Institute of Ophthalmology, Bhopal, in 1999. He received his MS in Ophthalmology from S N Medical College, Agra, UP, and trained at Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai, in Small Incision Cataract Surgery and Phaco-emulsification. Further, he trained in Vitreo-Retina super-specialty under Dr V. Narendran from Aravind Eye Hospital, Coimbatore.

He has to his credit about 45 national and international research papers and eight national publications in ophthalmology. He is an invited faculty and a guest speaker at many forums and a contributor to several international research projects. He is also a member of European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.


Dr. Dharmendra Singh Dr. Dharmendra Singh, MS
Medical Officer In-charge, IGEHRC Amethi

Dr Dharmendra Singh serves as Medical Officer In-charge, IGEHRC Amethi. He is committed to quality eye care to poor of rural eastern UP and as a leader of the team at IGEHRC Amethi examines 75,000 patients per year with his entire team and performs sight-restoring operations of about 15,000 patients per year.

Dr Singh coordinates training programmes of doctors and other ophthalmic personnel and is also Head of Glaucoma Unit at IGEHRC Amethi which takes care of 18,000 patients per year. Dr Singh has performed over 7,000 surgeries which also includes more than 500 glaucoma surgeries and had attended numerous eye camps. He is also committed to the expansion of at IGEHRC Amethi and was instrumental in starting the New Vision Centre at Raebareli.

Dr Dharmendra Singh was awarded his basic medical degree of MBBS from University of Gorakhpur in 2001-2002 and received his MS in Ophthalmology from SN Medical College, Agra. He has also received short term IOL fellowship and basic training in ophthalmology at Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai. Dr Singh has presented papers at various conferences and published articles in national and international journals.


Dr. Ankit Avasthi Dr. Ankit Avasthi, MD
Chief, Vitreo-Retina Services, IGEHRC Lucknow

Dr Ankit Avasthi serves as Consultant and Chief, Vitreo-Retina Services at IGEHRC Lucknow. He is deeply committed to providing top quality super-specialty services in the field of Vitreo-Retina and his areas of interest include screening and management of Retinopathy of Prematurity. He specialises in the management of complicated diabetic vitrectomies and envisages an elevation of diabetic retinopathy management to the next level. He also has an academic involvement in the projects of IGEHRC.

Prior to joining IGEHRC, Dr Avasthi worked as Consultant and Chief, Vitreo-Retina Services at Aravind Eye Hospital, Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. While at Aravind, he was instrumental in developing Vitreo-Retina Services to include an array of Vitreo-Retina surgeries as well as ROP and Diabetic Retinopathy screening and management programmes which screened over 25,000 patients. He subsequently worked as Consultant, Vitreo-Retina Services, Sankar Foundation Eye Hospital, Vishakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. During his career, Dr Avasthi has performed approximately 1,500 Vitreo-Retina surgeries and about 5,000 sight-restoring cataract surgeries and held more than 200 eye camps including diabetic retinopathy screening camps.

Dr Avasthi was awarded his basic medical degree of MBBS from the SDU Medical College, Kolar (Bangalore University) in 1999. He received his DNB in Ophthalmology from Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai. He has trained in the Vitreo-Retina super-specialty under Dr P. Namperumalsamy and Dr R. Kim from Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai. In addition, he has passed his MRCO I and plans to pursue it further. He has presented several research papers at various conferences and is involves in several research activities at IGEHRC.


Dr. Monika Gupta   Dr. Monika Gupta, MD
Chief of Glaucoma Services, IGEHRC Lucknow

Dr Monika Gupta is currently Consultant and Head of Department of Glaucoma at IGEHRC Lucknow. Dr Gupta and her husband (a cataract specialist) were the founding members of the team of doctors that created IGEHRC, Amethi. She is deeply committed to eradicating needless blindness and serving the community, especially the underprivileged. She has established Glaucoma Services at IGEHRC Amethi and Lucknow which see over 3,500 glaucoma patients and provide surgical treatment to about 100 glaucoma patients every month. During her career she has performed more than 2,000 glaucoma surgeries and 7,000 cataract surgeries. She has trained many trainee doctors in the diagnosis and management of glaucoma and has presented several papers at various conferences.

In spite of a vast clinical exposure and advanced surgical training she received in glaucoma at Aravind Eye Hospital, she was deeply concerned at the severe lack of good quality eye care, especially glaucoma, in her home state of UP. The establishment of IGEHRC in December 2005 was a unique opportunity to serve the people of the state where quality eye care facilities were accessible only to a privileged few.

Dr Gupta was awarded her basic medical degree of MBBS from GSVM Medical College, Kanpur in 2000. She received her MS in Ophthalmology from MLB Medical College, Jhansi, in 2004 and completed her Advanced Glaucoma Fellowship under Dr R. Krishnadas at the Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai.


Dr. Bhagwati Wadwekar Dr. Bhagwati Wadwekar
Medical Officer, IGEHRC Lucknow

Dr Bhagwati Wadwekar is currently working as Consultant Ophthalmologist and Medical Officer at IGEHRC Lucknow. She has joined IGEHRC with aim of serving underprivileged people of UP.

She has also worked as consultant ophthalmologist at Sewa Sadan Eye Hospital, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh (MP).

She has performed a wide range of ophthalmology surgeries such as cataract, DCT, DCR, Pterygium excision with grafting and Ectropian correction. During her career she has performed around 5,000 ophthalmic surgeries and has screened the eyes of over one lakh patients.

She has presented her research paper on “Dry Eye Syndrome” at the All India Ophthalmology Conference and was awarded “Best Paper Award” for it.

She has done her MBBS from Gandhi Medical College, Bhopal, MP, and her MS Ophthalmology from Shyam Shah Medical College, Rewa , MP. She has been working in the field of ophthalmology for the last 10 years and is an experienced ophthalmology surgeon and consultant.
