IGEHRC, Community Screening Camps

RGMVP is RGCT’s flagship poverty alleviation and women’s empowerment programme, working in UP through women’s self help groups (SHGs) that are also nodal institutions in fulfilling social objectives such as healthcare, education, sustainable agriculture, livelihood enhancement and gender equality. RGMVP’s community health activists (Swathya Sakhis) are trained in basic health issues and spread awareness at SHGs and in villages.

IGEHRC has trained two batches (55 and 60) of Swathya Sakhis. The two-day training included an orientation on IGEHRC, the anatomy of the eye, common eye diseases, evaluation of visual acuity, method of using vision chart, identification of cataract, importance of refraction, usage of handouts and charts, vision check-up, refraction procedure, practical on identification of cataract and other eye ailments and group discussion. Equipped with this information and an eye kit containing a vision chart, a tape to measure distance as well as literature on eye care and diseases, the trained Swathya Sakhis are now working in the field to create awareness on eye care, do basic eye screening, refer those found to have eye problems to IGEHRC or accompany them if required to the hospitals. More Swathya Sakhis are planned to be trained in the coming months.

RAY clinics provide free medical aid to the poor people of Amethi district. RAY runs 16 clinics in the area in collaboration with Asia Heart Foundation which manages these clinics. They function as open patient departments (OPDs) which provide consultancy, treatment and free medicine for minor ailments, referring advanced and complicated cases to the Sanjay Gandhi Hospital in Munshiganj.

IGEHRC has trained all 16 doctors and 32 paramedical staff at these clinics in basic eye screening, the anatomy of the eye, common eye diseases, evaluation of visual acuity, method of using vision chart, identification of cataract, importance of refraction, usage of handouts and charts, vision check-up, refraction procedure, so that patients found to have eye ailments/problems can be referred to IGEHRC for further treatment. Each clinic has also been provided with vision charts and eye screening kits.
