Chief Executive Officer, Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust (RGCT)

Dr Yashwantrao Shankarao Patil Thorat, PhD (Economics), BA, LLB, CAIIB, is Chief Executive Officer of RGCT.

He joined the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in 1972 in the middle management cadre, and rose to the rank of Executive Director in 2003. In the following year, he was appointed by the Government of India as Managing Director of the National Bank for Agriculture & Rural Development (NABARD) and was subsequently elevated to Chairman, NABARD. Dr Thorat superannuated in November 2007 and in the following month took up appointment as Chairman, Expert Group on Sugar Policy (Government of India) and also as Dean, School of Liberal Education, FLAME, Pune.

Dr Thorat has held a large number of Board positions including at the Oriental Bank of Commerce, Punjab National Bank, IDFC, EXIM Bank of India, ECGC, NCDEX, IDBI Bank, etc. As Chairman or Member Secretary of various committees set up by the Government of India, he has contributed to policy formulation at the national level including microfinance, financial inclusion and SHGs. He has also taught as a Visiting Lecturer/Fellow at various national and international universities.

Dr Thorat completed his schooling from Mayo College, Ajmer and college education from the Elphinstone College, Mumbai, Rajaram and Shahaji Law Colleges, Kolhapur, from where he took degrees in Political Science and Law.
